War Time

Definition

War Time is a historical civil-time adjustment adopted by some governments during wartime, usually by setting clocks one hour or occasionally two hours ahead of standard time. It functioned much like daylight saving time, although its dates, duration, and official names varied by country and locality. In astrological records, a birth time labeled “War Time” therefore requires conversion to the correct standard or universal time.

Astrological Meaning

War Time has no separate symbolic meaning in a horoscope. Its importance is technical: the applicable clock correction affects the calculated positions of the angles and house cusps. An incorrect conversion can change the Ascendant or Midheaven, especially when either lies near a sign boundary. It may also alter the Moon’s recorded degree and the timing of aspects, transits, progressions, or other time-sensitive techniques. The astrologer must distinguish the stated local clock time from local standard time, daylight saving time, and Universal Time.

Why It Matters

Accurate handling of War Time helps ensure that a natal or event chart reflects the historical timekeeping rules in force at that place and date. Modern software may include these changes, but older records, border changes, local exceptions, and inconsistent terminology can produce uncertainty. Checking government archives, historical time-zone tables, or reliable databases is preferable to assuming a universal one-hour correction. When evidence remains incomplete, the chart can be interpreted cautiously, with attention given to placements that do not depend heavily on an exact birth time.
