Under the Sunbeams

Definition

Under the Sunbeams is a traditional astrological condition in which a planet lies close enough to the Sun to be obscured by its light. A commonly used boundary is about 15 degrees from the Sun, although historical authorities and modern practitioners may use slightly different limits. It is generally less severe than combustion, while cazimi describes an exceptionally close conjunction traditionally considered strengthening.

Astrological Meaning

A planet under the Sun’s beams may have difficulty expressing its usual qualities openly or independently. Its topics can become absorbed into solar concerns such as identity, purpose, authority, visibility, or recognition. For example, Mercury under the beams may describe thoughts or communications that remain private, develop behind the scenes, or become closely tied to personal aims. Interpretation depends on the planet, sign, house, dignity, sect, aspects, and whether it is moving toward or away from the Sun. Applying proximity may suggest increasing concealment, while separation can indicate gradual emergence.

Why It Matters

This condition adds nuance to judgments about planetary strength and visibility in a natal chart, horary chart, or election. It does not automatically make a planet ineffective or unfortunate. Instead, it invites the astrologer to ask how clearly the planet can act, whether its matters are hidden, and how strongly the Sun dominates its expression. Distinguishing under the beams from combustion and cazimi prevents overly broad interpretations based only on a Sun conjunction.
