Synodical Lunation

Definition

A synodical lunation is the Moon’s complete phase cycle in relation to the Sun, measured from one New Moon to the next. It lasts about 29.5 days and includes the New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon, and Last Quarter. “Synodical” is an older form of “synodic,” meaning a cycle based on the repeated alignment of two celestial bodies.

Astrological Meaning

In astrology, the synodical lunation provides a framework for interpreting development through recurring phases. The New Moon may signify emergence or intention; the waxing half of the cycle favors building and engagement; the Full Moon can correspond with culmination, visibility, or heightened awareness; and the waning half is often associated with evaluation, release, and preparation. Interpretation depends on the zodiac signs, houses, aspects, and planets involved in a particular lunation. In natal work, the lunar phase at birth may also describe a person’s characteristic way of approaching growth and change.
