Definition

Separating describes two planets moving away from an exact aspect after the aspect has perfected. Usually, the faster-moving planet has already reached the precise angular relationship with the slower planet and is now increasing its distance from that point. Separation is assessed through planetary speed, direction, aspect type, and the allowable orb; it is the counterpart of application.

Astrological Meaning

In traditional astrology, a separating aspect often symbolizes something already initiated, recently completed, or beginning to lose momentum. In horary astrology, the Moon’s separating aspects may describe prior events or conditions that led to the present question, while applying aspects can indicate what is developing next. Separation does not automatically mean failure or permanent loss. Reception, dignity, house rulership, intervening aspects, and other chart factors can substantially alter the interpretation. In natal astrology, some astrologers treat separating aspects as familiar patterns whose exact symbolic peak lies just behind the birth moment, though this distinction is generally less decisive than it is in horary work.

Why It Matters

Recognizing separation helps establish timing and sequence. It prevents an astrologer from treating every planet within an aspect’s orb as if the connection were still forming. This distinction is especially useful when judging whether a matter is emerging, has already occurred, or is gradually dispersing. Accurate interpretation requires checking the planets’ actual motion rather than relying only on the visual closeness of chart positions.
