Homodromi, a Greek term meaning “fellow-runners,” describes planets traveling in the same apparent direction through the zodiac. They may both be moving direct or, in some traditional usages, both moving retrograde. The term concerns shared direction rather than conjunction: the planets do not have to occupy the same sign or degree.
Classical astrologers used planetary direction and speed to judge how planets approached, completed, or withdrew from relationships. When planets are homodromi, their shared direction can clarify which body is pursuing and which is being overtaken, especially when examining an applying aspect. Their relative speeds remain essential. A faster planet may close the distance to a slower one, while planets moving at similar rates may maintain separation for longer. Sign boundaries, stations, retrogradation, and aspect doctrine can modify the judgment.
Recognizing fellow-runners helps prevent an aspect from being interpreted as a static pattern. Astrology treats planets as moving bodies, so direction and speed reveal whether a connection is developing, sustained, interrupted, or separating. In natal work, homodromi can add technical detail to aspect analysis, but it should not be treated as an independent promise of harmony or conflict. Its value comes from combining it with planetary condition, rulership, house placement, and the specific aspect involved.
