Definition

A satellite is an object that revolves around a larger celestial body. Satellites may be natural, such as the Moon orbiting Earth, or artificial, such as spacecraft placed in orbit. In astrological terminology, the word most often describes an astronomical relationship rather than a separate traditional chart category.

Astrological Meaning

The Moon is Earth’s natural satellite and one of astrology’s principal symbols, associated with emotional responses, habits, memory, security, and changing rhythms. Other planets also have moons, but traditional Western astrology generally does not interpret those satellites as independent chart factors. Some modern or experimental approaches may examine them symbolically, yet their meanings are not standardized. Artificial satellites are likewise not normally assigned planetary rulerships, zodiacal dignities, or conventional natal interpretations.

Why It Matters

Understanding the term helps separate astronomy from established astrological practice. A reference to a planet’s satellite does not automatically mean that the body should be added to a natal chart. Before interpreting one, an astrologer should identify the method being used, check whether reliable positions are available, and explain how much interpretive weight the factor receives. For most readings, the Moon, planets, angles, houses, and major aspects provide the recognized foundation, while additional satellites remain optional research factors.
