Definition
Rectification is the process of estimating an unknown or uncertain birth time by comparing possible natal charts with known life events and personal characteristics. Because the Ascendant, Midheaven, houses, and some planetary positions depend on precise timing, an astrologer may test a range of birth times to find the chart that best matches reliable biographical evidence.
Astrological Meaning
A rectification commonly begins with an approximate time from family records, memory, or official documents. The astrologer then examines time-sensitive factors such as house cusps, angles, profections, directions, progressions, and transits associated with dated events. Marriage, relocation, career changes, births, losses, and other major transitions may provide useful reference points. The aim is not simply to choose a chart that feels accurate, but to identify a birth time that works consistently across several independent techniques and events.
Why It Matters
Even a small change in birth time can alter the rising sign, house placements, and timing methods used in interpretation. Careful rectification can therefore make a natal chart more dependable when the recorded time is missing or doubtful. However, the result remains an informed estimate rather than a proven fact, and its reliability depends on accurate dates, sound technique, and transparent reasoning.
