Definition

The querent is the person who asks an astrologer a specific question, especially in horary astrology. The word comes from a term meaning “to inquire.” A querent may be the client receiving the consultation or, in some cases, the astrologer asking a sincere question on someone’s behalf. The term differs from “native,” which usually refers to the person whose birth chart is being studied.

Astrological Meaning

In a horary chart, the querent is generally represented by the first house, its ruling planet, and often the Moon as a supplementary indicator. These factors describe the querent’s circumstances, perspective, resources, and ability to act within the matter being examined. The person, object, or outcome being asked about is assigned to another relevant house and its ruler. Interpretation then considers the condition of each significator and the connections between them, including aspects, receptions, dignity, and house placement. Specific traditions may apply these factors somewhat differently.

Why It Matters

Correctly identifying the querent establishes the chart’s point of view and helps distinguish the questioner from the subject of the question. This is essential when several people are involved, such as questions about partners, relatives, employers, or missing possessions.
