Oriental describes a planet that rises before the Sun, appearing above the eastern horizon ahead of sunrise. The term identifies the planet’s relationship to the Sun rather than merely placing it in the eastern half of a horoscope. Its opposite is occidental, which describes a planet rising after the Sun and commonly visible after sunset.

Astrological Meaning

In traditional astrology, oriental status is one part of assessing a planet’s condition, visibility, and manner of expression. Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn were often considered more naturally placed when oriental, although interpretation depends on the specific technique and chart context. Mercury and Venus may be described as morning stars when oriental. Some modern astrologers also emphasize the planet immediately preceding the Sun as an “oriental planet,” interpreting it as a leading faculty through which the person approaches experience. This modern use should not be confused with simply having planets on the eastern side of the natal chart.

Why It Matters

Recognizing whether a planet is oriental helps clarify solar phase and prevents confusion with house position or hemisphere emphasis. It can add nuance to traditional evaluations of planetary strength and to modern interpretations of temperament. The condition should be considered alongside sign, house, aspects, sect, speed, and visibility rather than treated as a stand-alone judgment.
