Nativity

Definition

In astrology, a nativity is the chart calculated for the time and place of a person’s birth. The term is especially common in traditional astrology and is broadly equivalent to a natal chart or birth chart. It may also refer to the birth itself as the event represented by that chart.

Astrological Meaning

A nativity maps the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, angles, houses, and other relevant points at birth. Astrologers interpret their signs, house placements, aspects, and condition to explore temperament, abilities, relationships, challenges, and recurring life themes. Traditional methods may give particular attention to sect, planetary dignity, house rulership, and the condition of the Ascendant and its ruler. The nativity is the foundational chart against which later timing techniques are assessed.

Why It Matters

Understanding the nativity helps distinguish natal symbolism from transits, progressions, profections, and other techniques describing particular periods. It provides the underlying context for interpretation, but it is not usually treated as a rigid script. Astrological indications may describe tendencies and possibilities whose expression can vary with choices, circumstances, culture, and personal development.
