The Metonic Cycle is a period of approximately 19 tropical years, during which 235 synodic lunar months occur. After this interval, the phases of the Moon return to nearly the same dates in the solar year. Named after the ancient Greek astronomer Meton, the cycle became important for coordinating lunar months with solar calendars.

Astrological Meaning

In astrology, the Metonic Cycle provides a framework for comparing lunations separated by about 19 years. A New Moon, Full Moon, or eclipse may occur near the same zodiacal degree and calendar date as one from the earlier cycle, potentially reviving related themes. This is not an exact return: planetary placements, lunar nodes, houses, and personal circumstances will differ. It should also be distinguished from the Saros cycle, which more specifically tracks the recurrence of eclipses with similar astronomical geometry.
