Mesmerism
Definition
Mesmerism is a historical theory and practice developed by Franz Anton Mesmer in the eighteenth century. Mesmer proposed that an invisible force called animal magnetism flowed through living beings and could be directed to produce physical or psychological effects. Although his theory was rejected by modern science, mesmeric practices contributed to the later development of hypnosis. In occult literature, the term may also describe trance, fascination, personal magnetism, or heightened suggestibility.
Astrological Meaning
Mesmerism is not a standard planet, aspect, placement, or established predictive method in traditional astrology. When astrologers use the term symbolically, they may associate it with an individual’s capacity to captivate others, enter receptive states, or respond strongly to atmosphere and suggestion. Depending on the interpretive system, these themes may be explored through the Moon and Neptune for sensitivity and altered awareness, Mercury for mental influence, or Pluto for intensity and compelling presence. Such correspondences are modern and should not be treated as universal rules.
Why It Matters
Understanding mesmerism helps readers interpret older astrological and esoteric texts in their historical context. It also prevents vague references to “magnetism” from being mistaken for a specific chart technique. If the idea is applied to a natal chart, it is best considered alongside the whole chart, personal circumstances, and ordinary psychological explanations rather than used to claim supernatural control or inevitable influence.
