Definition

Major planets is a general astrological term for the principal planetary bodies used to interpret a horoscope. In traditional astrology, these are the seven visible planets: the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Modern astrologers commonly add Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. The exact meaning therefore depends on the system and historical context.

Astrological Meaning

Each major planet symbolizes a distinct set of functions and experiences. The Sun concerns identity and purpose; the Moon, emotional needs and habits; Mercury, thought and communication; Venus, attraction and values; Mars, action and desire; Jupiter, growth and meaning; and Saturn, structure and responsibility. Uranus is associated with disruption and innovation, Neptune with imagination and transcendence, and Pluto with power and transformation. Astrologers interpret these principles through each planet’s zodiac sign, house position, aspects, condition, and relationship to the chart as a whole.

Why It Matters

The major planets provide the basic vocabulary for natal, transit, electional, horary, and mundane interpretation. Recognizing which planetary system an astrologer uses prevents confusion, especially when comparing traditional and modern approaches. No planet operates in isolation, and prominence does not automatically make its symbolism beneficial or difficult; expression depends on context, dignity, timing, and the person’s circumstances.
