Hellenistic Astrology
Definition
Hellenistic Astrology is a tradition that developed around the Mediterranean from approximately the second century BCE through the seventh century CE. It brought together Babylonian, Egyptian, and Greek ideas into a systematic form of horoscopic astrology. Characteristic methods include whole-sign houses, sect, planetary condition, annual profections, lots, and timing techniques designed to examine different areas and periods of life.
Astrological Meaning
In interpretation, Hellenistic Astrology emphasizes the condition and role of each planet rather than relying only on zodiac-sign descriptions. An astrologer may consider whether a chart is diurnal or nocturnal, which houses planets occupy, the houses they rule, their aspects, and their relative strength or difficulty. Benefic and malefic classifications describe traditional planetary functions, but their expression depends on context and should not be treated as automatically fortunate or harmful.
Why It Matters
This tradition provides the foundation for many techniques used in contemporary Western astrology. Studying it can clarify why houses, planetary rulerships, aspects, and predictive methods work together as a coherent system. Its structured approach may help astrologers identify major chart themes and life cycles while preserving room for individual circumstances, personal choice, and multiple possible expressions of a placement or timing period.
