Lunar Mansions

Definition

Lunar Mansions are divisions of the Moon’s path through the sky, each associated with particular stars, images, or symbolic themes. Depending on the tradition, the cycle contains 27 or 28 mansions. Examples include the nakshatras of Indian astrology, the Arabic manazil al-qamar, and the Chinese xiu. Unlike the twelve zodiac signs, these sections follow the Moon’s daily progress more closely.

Astrological Meaning

Astrologers interpret a mansion according to the Moon’s position within its cycle and the traditional qualities assigned to that section. In natal astrology, the Moon’s mansion may add detail concerning emotional habits, instincts, attachments, and patterns of response. In electional astrology, mansions have historically been used to assess whether a chosen time supports activities such as travel, agreements, building, healing rituals, or relationships. Interpretive rules differ substantially between systems, so meanings should not be transferred from one tradition to another without context.

Why It Matters

Lunar Mansions provide a finer-grained way to study lunar symbolism than zodiac signs alone. They can reveal how different astrological cultures organized the heavens and timed earthly activities.
