Stations of the Moon

Definition

The Stations of the Moon are divisions of the Moon’s path through the sky, more commonly known as lunar mansions. Most traditional systems use 27 or 28 sections, reflecting the Moon’s approximate daily movement against the stars. The term does not usually mean that the Moon becomes stationary, as a planet appears to do when changing direction.

Astrological Meaning

Astrologers interpret the station occupied by the Moon as an additional description of lunar condition, timing, and emphasis. Each station traditionally carries particular images, planetary associations, or themes that may support, hinder, or characterize an undertaking. In a natal chart, a lunar station can add nuance to emotional habits, instincts, relationships, and personal priorities. In electional or horary astrology, it may help assess the atmosphere surrounding a chosen time or question. Meanings differ among Arabic lunar mansions, Indian nakshatras, Chinese lunar lodges, and other systems, so their symbols and boundaries should not be combined indiscriminately.

Why It Matters

Lunar stations preserve a star-based layer of astrology that predates many modern chart practices. They can refine interpretation beyond zodiac sign and house placement, especially in traditional timing work. Their value depends on using a clearly identified system, accurate positions, and appropriate historical context rather than treating every list of stations as interchangeable.
