Definition

In astrology, a lord is the planet that rules a particular zodiac sign or house. For example, Mars is the traditional lord of Aries, while the planet ruling the sign on a house cusp is called that house’s lord. The term is especially common in traditional, Hellenistic, medieval, and Vedic astrology, although rulership systems can vary by tradition.

Astrological Meaning

A lord acts as a representative or manager of the place it governs. Its zodiac sign, house position, aspects, motion, and overall condition help describe how the topics of that sign or house may operate. If Venus rules the seventh house, for instance, Venus’s placement contributes information about relationships and agreements. This does not replace interpretation of the seventh house itself; rather, it connects that house’s concerns with the location and condition of its ruling planet. Traditional astrologers may also assess dignity, sect, combustion, retrogradation, and planetary support when judging a lord.

Why It Matters

Identifying lords reveals links between different parts of a natal chart and helps organize interpretation. House lords can show where certain life themes are directed, while dispositor chains trace how planets depend upon one another. Because rulership conventions differ, astrologers should state whether they are using traditional or modern planetary rulers and consider the full chart before drawing conclusions.
