Kronos

Definition

Kronos is a name with two distinct astrological uses. In classical contexts, Kronos—or Cronus—is the Greek mythological figure identified with the Roman Saturn, so it generally refers to Saturn rather than a separate planet. In Hamburg School or Uranian astrology, Kronos is instead a hypothetical trans-Neptunian factor. It should not be confused with Chronos, the Greek personification of time.

Astrological Meaning

When Kronos means Saturn, interpretation centers on structure, limits, responsibility, endurance, maturity, authority, and the consequences of time. Its expression depends on Saturn’s sign, house, aspects, rulerships, sect, and condition in the chart. In Uranian astrology, Kronos is interpreted separately as a symbolic factor associated with leadership, expertise, high standards, institutions, government, rank, and independence. These meanings belong to different astrological systems and should not be blended without explanation.

Why It Matters

Recognizing which Kronos is intended prevents a major interpretive error. A classical text mentioning Kronos will usually be discussing Saturn, while a Uranian chart may display Kronos as a calculated point with its own glyph and midpoint relationships. Checking the author’s tradition, chart format, and terminology provides the necessary context. In natal work, Kronos may therefore describe Saturn’s tested discipline or, within Uranian practice, themes involving authority and professional distinction; neither usage guarantees a particular outcome.
