Tables of Houses are reference tables used to determine the zodiacal degrees appearing on the cusps of astrological houses. Before chart-calculation software became common, astrologers consulted these printed tables using the chart’s local sidereal time, geographic latitude, and chosen house system. Different editions may cover systems such as Placidus, Regiomontanus, or Campanus, so the table must match the intended calculation method.
Astrological Meaning
Tables of Houses do not carry a separate symbolic meaning. Their role is mathematical: they translate astronomical and geographic information into house cusps, which establish where the twelve houses begin in a horoscope. Those cusps help astrologers assess which areas of life are associated with planets and signs. A planet near a cusp may require careful checking because rounding, birth-time uncertainty, latitude, and differences between house systems can alter its house placement.
Why It Matters
These tables are important to the history and practice of traditional chart calculation. Understanding how they work clarifies that house positions depend on more than a planet’s zodiac sign; time, place, and calculation method also matter.
