Definition

Horary time is the precise date and clock time used to cast a horary chart for a specific question. In many traditional practices, it is the moment an astrologer receives and clearly understands the question, rather than the moment the issue first arose. The chart is usually calculated for the astrologer’s location at that time, although practitioners may follow different established conventions.

Astrological Meaning

Horary astrologers treat this moment as the symbolic beginning of the consultation. Its planetary positions, houses, angles, and aspects form a chart focused on the matter being asked about. The Ascendant and its ruler commonly represent the person asking, while the relevant house and its ruler signify the subject. The Moon often describes how circumstances unfold. Accurate time matters because the Ascendant, house cusps, and sometimes the Moon’s applying aspects can change quickly.

Why It Matters

Choosing horary time consistently helps preserve the logic of the technique. An uncertain or altered time can assign different planetary rulers and substantially change an interpretation. Traditional astrologers may also examine whether the chart is fit to judge, using considerations such as a very early or late Ascendant, but these are interpretive cautions rather than automatic reasons to reject a chart. Horary time differs from natal time, which records a person’s birth, and from electional time, which is deliberately selected for a future action.
