Horary Circles

Definition

Horary circles, more commonly called hour circles, are imaginary great circles on the celestial sphere that pass through the north and south celestial poles. An hour circle also passes through a particular planet, star, or other celestial point. Astronomers use these circles to measure right ascension and hour angle. Despite the similar wording, the term does not ordinarily mean horary astrology, the branch that answers a specific question from a chart cast for the time it is asked.

Astrological Meaning

In traditional astrological practice, horary circles belong primarily to the astronomical framework used to establish celestial positions and timing. They help describe where a body lies relative to the celestial poles and meridian. This coordinate information can support chart calculation, especially in historical methods involving right ascension, semi-arcs, house division, or primary directions. A horary circle does not carry an independent symbolic meaning like a planet, sign, house, or aspect; its value is geometrical and computational.

Why It Matters

Understanding horary circles helps distinguish the mechanics of the celestial sphere from interpretive astrology. The concept is useful when studying older astrological texts, traditional chart construction, or directional techniques, where astronomical terminology may be assumed.
