Gregorian Calendar

Definition

The Gregorian calendar is the civil dating system now used in most of the world. Introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 as a reform of the Julian calendar, it corrected accumulated seasonal drift and revised the leap-year rule. A year generally has 365 days, with an extra day in leap years; century years are leap years only when divisible by 400.

Astrological Meaning

In astrology, the Gregorian calendar provides the recorded date from which chart calculations commonly begin. The date, exact local time, location, and applicable time-zone rules are converted into astronomical positions for the Sun, Moon, planets, angles, and houses. The calendar itself does not carry a separate symbolic meaning like a planet or zodiac sign. For historical charts, astrologers must determine whether the recorded date used the Gregorian or Julian calendar, since different countries adopted the reform at different times. Software may also use a proleptic Gregorian calendar for dates before 1582.

Why It Matters

Correct calendar identification helps prevent errors in natal charts, event charts, transits, and historical research. Confusing Julian and Gregorian dates can shift a chart by several days, changing the Moon’s position and sometimes other interpretive factors. It is also important to distinguish a calendar date from the tropical zodiac: the Gregorian calendar organizes civil time, while the zodiac is an astrological framework based on celestial cycles.
