Definition

Guarded is a traditional astrological condition in which a planet is enclosed or supported by benefic planets, usually Venus and Jupiter. Depending on the school and technique, this may mean that the planet is separating from one benefic and applying to the other by conjunction or aspect. The term is commonly treated as the favorable counterpart of being besieged by malefics.

Astrological Meaning

A guarded planet is interpreted as receiving protection, assistance, or room to express its nature more constructively. In a natal chart, it may suggest that difficulties associated with the planet are moderated by supportive circumstances, relationships, or personal resources. In horary or electional astrology, guarding can strengthen the promise of a significator or indicate help surrounding the matter. The result still depends on planetary dignity, house placement, aspect type, reception, and whether the benefics themselves are well placed.

Why It Matters

Recognizing guarding helps an astrologer evaluate a planet within its immediate context rather than judging it in isolation. A planet that appears weak or pressured may function more effectively when supported by benefics on both sides. However, guarding does not erase every challenge or guarantee a favorable outcome. Because traditional authors and modern practitioners may define enclosure differently—by bodily placement, degree order, or applying and separating aspects—the method being used should be stated clearly.
