Gibbous

Definition

Gibbous describes the Moon when more than half of its visible disk is illuminated but it is not yet full. A waxing gibbous Moon occurs between the First Quarter and Full Moon, while a waning gibbous Moon follows the Full Moon. In natal lunar-phase astrology, “Gibbous phase” often refers specifically to the waxing stage, when the Sun and Moon are approximately 135 to 180 degrees apart.

Astrological Meaning

Astrologically, the waxing Gibbous phase is associated with refinement, adjustment, and preparation for culmination. Its symbolism suggests that an idea or effort has developed substantially but still requires evaluation before reaching the visibility represented by the Full Moon. In a natal chart, this phase may indicate a person inclined to improve methods, examine details, and develop abilities through sustained attention. Interpretation should also consider the signs, houses, aspects, and condition of both luminaries rather than treating the phase as a complete personality description. A waning gibbous Moon carries a different emphasis and is often associated with sharing, distribution, or reflection after culmination.
