Fortitude

Definition

Fortitude is a traditional astrology term for a condition that strengthens a planet’s ability to act. It is commonly evaluated through essential dignity, which concerns zodiacal position, and accidental dignity, which concerns circumstances such as house placement, motion, speed, visibility, and aspects. The opposite conditions are often called debilities.

Astrological Meaning

A fortified planet is generally interpreted as having greater capacity to express its significations consistently or effectively. A planet in its domicile or exaltation may possess essential fortitude, while one placed in an angular house or moving direct and swiftly may gain accidental fortitude. These forms of strength are not identical: essential dignity can describe the quality or integrity of a planet’s expression, whereas accidental dignity can indicate its practical ability to produce effects. Interpretation also depends on the planet’s role in the chart and its relationships with other planets.

Why It Matters

Assessing fortitude helps an astrologer move beyond simple labels such as beneficial or difficult. A strong planet may be prominent and capable without necessarily producing easy experiences, while a less fortified planet may operate more indirectly or require support. Comparing strengths and weaknesses provides useful context in natal, horary, electional, and other traditional chart work.
