Erratics

Definition

Erratics is an older astrological term for the planets, understood as “wandering stars” because they appear to move against the background of fixed stars. In the traditional geocentric model, their paths include changes in speed, stations, and periods of apparent retrograde motion. The term may include the Sun and Moon when they are grouped with the classical planets as moving celestial lights.

Astrological Meaning

Erratics are not usually interpreted as a separate chart factor. Rather, the term emphasizes the planets’ mobility and their changing relationships with the zodiac and one another. Each planet is judged through its inherent symbolism, sign, house, aspects, rulerships, dignity, and phase of motion. A planet moving directly, slowing toward a station, or appearing retrograde may express its themes differently, but the whole chart determines whether that condition is prominent, constructive, restrained, or complex.

Why It Matters

Recognizing this historical term makes older astrological writings easier to understand and prevents confusion with modern ideas of random or unstable behavior. It also highlights a central distinction in classical astrology: planets wander and act as time-sensitive significators, while fixed stars retain comparatively stable zodiacal positions. Knowing the term supports clearer study of planetary motion, traditional chart judgment, and changing celestial conditions.
