D. Houses

Definition

D. Houses is an abbreviated term for derived, derivative, or turned houses. This traditional technique temporarily treats one house as the first house of a person or matter and then counts onward from it. For example, the seventh house signifies a partner; the partner’s finances are shown by the second house from the seventh, which is the radical eighth house. “Radical” refers to the houses as originally numbered from the chart’s Ascendant.

Astrological Meaning

Derived houses allow astrologers to examine relationships among people, possessions, events, and responsibilities represented within one chart. The fifth house from the seventh may describe a partner’s children, while the tenth from the fourth can be consulted for matters involving a parent’s public role. Interpretation combines the meaning of the derived house with the condition of its ruler, planets occupying it, and relevant aspects. The technique is especially prominent in horary and traditional astrology, although it may also supplement natal work.

Why It Matters

Using D. Houses helps keep complex questions organized by clarifying whose circumstances are being considered. Accurate counting is essential: the selected significator house becomes the temporary first house, and counting proceeds inclusively. Derived houses should not automatically replace the radical houses or the chart’s broader context. When several house assignments seem possible, the astrologer can favor the one most directly connected to the question and seek confirmation from rulers, aspects, and other testimonies.
