Directions are predictive techniques that symbolically advance points in a natal chart to identify periods when their relationships become active. In traditional astrology, the term most often refers to primary directions, which use the apparent daily rotation of the heavens. The resulting arc is converted into time through a chosen directional key.

Astrological Meaning

A direction links a moving significator, such as the Ascendant, Midheaven, Sun, or Moon, with a promissor, typically a planet, angle, or aspect. The natal condition of both factors shapes the interpretation. Benefic or supportive combinations may correspond with openings, recognition, or greater ease, while difficult combinations can indicate pressure, adjustment, or demanding circumstances. Directions differ from transits: transits track planets’ actual movement through the zodiac, whereas directions use a symbolic timing procedure. Some traditions also use the word more broadly for secondary progressions or solar-arc directions, so the method should always be identified.

Why It Matters

Directions provide a traditional framework for timing when natal themes may become especially prominent. They are usually interpreted alongside profections, solar returns, transits, and the overall natal chart rather than as isolated predictions. Because calculation methods and timing keys vary, exact dates can differ between practitioners. Their greatest value lies in highlighting meaningful periods for reflection and preparation without implying that a particular event is inevitable.
