Contra antiscions

Definition

Contra antiscions are sensitive zodiacal points used mainly in traditional astrology. A planet’s contra-antiscion is the point directly opposite its antiscion, or solstitial mirror point. Contra-antiscion pairs are equally distant from the Aries–Libra equinoctial axis. For example, a planet at 10° Taurus has its antiscion at 20° Leo and its contra-antiscion at 20° Aquarius.

Astrological Meaning

When two planets occupy one another’s contra-antiscion degrees, they are traditionally understood to share a concealed or indirect relationship resembling an opposition. The connection may indicate tension, contrast, awareness through difference, or circumstances that bring two planetary principles into confrontation. Interpretation depends on the planets, their signs, houses, condition, and the chart’s wider context. Many traditional practitioners use a narrow orb, often about one degree, because contra-antiscions are degree-specific contacts rather than ordinary sign-based aspects. Their influence is usually treated as supplementary to visible aspects, not as a replacement for them.

Why It Matters

Contra-antiscions can reveal relationships between planets that appear unconnected when only standard aspects are considered. In natal work, they may add nuance to an internal conflict or recurring polarity. In synastry, they can suggest a subtle point of contrast between two charts. In horary or event astrology, they may provide supporting testimony when other chart factors agree.
