Apogee
Definition
Apogee is the point in an orbit at which an object is farthest from Earth. In astrology, the term most often refers to the Moon’s apogee, commonly associated with Black Moon Lilith. Because the lunar orbit continually changes, astrologers may calculate this point as either the mean apogee or the true, oscillating apogee.
Astrological Meaning
The lunar apogee is a calculated point rather than a physical planet or body. Astrologers often interpret it as representing independence, exclusion, taboo, instinct, or aspects of experience that resist accommodation. Its zodiac sign may describe the style through which these themes emerge, while its house can suggest the life area in which they become noticeable. Aspects to planets may show how the apogee’s symbolism interacts with drives, relationships, emotions, or identity. Interpretations differ among traditions, so the chosen calculation method should be stated clearly.
Why It Matters
Understanding apogee helps distinguish astronomical terminology from its later symbolic use in astrology. It also prevents Black Moon Lilith from being confused with the asteroid Lilith or other similarly named points. In chart interpretation, apogee is usually most useful as a secondary factor considered alongside planets, angles, houses, and major aspects rather than as a stand-alone indicator.
