Constellations
Definition
Constellations are recognizable arrangements of stars and, in modern astronomy, officially bounded regions of the sky. The zodiac constellations lie along the ecliptic, the apparent annual path of the Sun. Although constellations helped inspire astrological symbolism, they are not identical to zodiac signs, which are interpretive divisions used to construct charts.
Astrological Meaning
In tropical astrology, the zodiac consists of twelve equal 30-degree signs beginning at the March equinox; these signs no longer align exactly with their namesake constellations because of precession. Sidereal systems use stellar reference points to position the zodiac, though their signs are also generally equal divisions rather than copies of irregular constellation boundaries. Constellations may additionally provide the mythic background for sign symbolism, while individual fixed stars within them can be interpreted separately when closely connected with chart factors.
Why It Matters
Understanding the distinction prevents confusion between astronomical star patterns and astrological signs. It also clarifies why a planet may appear astronomically in one constellation while occupying a differently named sign in a tropical chart. For chart interpretation, the astrologer’s chosen zodiac, house system, planetary placements, and aspects usually matter more than constellation boundaries, unless fixed stars or constellation lore are being studied deliberately.
