Parallel
Definition
A parallel is a declination aspect formed when two planets or chart points occupy nearly the same degree of declination on the same side of the celestial equator. Declination measures how far north or south a body lies, rather than its position along the zodiac. Astrologers commonly use an orb of about one degree, although preferred limits vary.
Astrological Meaning
A parallel is generally interpreted in a conjunction-like way: the two factors combine, reinforce, or intensify one another. Its expression depends on the planets involved, their signs, houses, condition, and the wider chart. In a natal chart, it may reveal an important connection that is not obvious from standard zodiacal aspects. A transiting parallel can temporarily activate natal themes, while a synastry parallel may describe a notable resonance between two people’s planetary functions. Unlike a contra-parallel, both bodies are north or both are south of the celestial equator.
Why It Matters
Parallels add a second dimension to aspect analysis and can clarify why two planets seem strongly connected even when they do not form a familiar longitudinal aspect. They are especially useful as supporting evidence rather than isolated proof. Checking declination alongside ordinary aspects can produce a more complete interpretation while keeping the chart’s main patterns in perspective.
