Contra-Parallel Aspect

Definition

A contra-parallel is a declination aspect formed when two planets are approximately the same distance from the celestial equator but on opposite sides of it—one north and the other south. Unlike ordinary aspects, which are measured by zodiacal longitude, contra-parallels use celestial declination. Astrologers generally apply a tight orb, often about one degree or less.

Astrological Meaning

The contra-parallel is commonly interpreted as resembling an opposition, suggesting tension, contrast, or a need to balance the two planetary principles. Its effect may be subtle unless reinforced by other chart factors. In a natal chart, it can describe an internal polarity that becomes productive through awareness. During transits, a moving planet contra-parallel to a natal planet may coincide with temporary pressure or heightened activity. In synastry, the aspect can indicate contrasting responses between two people, although the complete relationship chart remains essential.
