Application

Definition

Application is the movement of two planets toward an exact aspect. An aspect is applying when the distance between the planets is decreasing; after exactness, it becomes separating. The faster planet usually applies to the slower one, although retrograde motion, changing speed, and house or sign boundaries can complicate the judgment. The exact aspect is traditionally called perfection.

Astrological Meaning

In traditional astrology, application suggests that the matters represented by the planets are moving toward contact, development, or resolution. The aspect involved describes the form of that contact: a trine may indicate relatively easy cooperation, while a square can point to effort, conflict, or obstacles. Reception, planetary condition, allowable orb, and possible interference from another planet all modify the interpretation. In horary and electional work, application is especially important when assessing whether a matter is likely to come together. In a natal chart, an applying aspect may feel active, immediate, or strongly developmental, but it does not guarantee a particular event.

Why It Matters

Recognizing application helps an astrologer distinguish an emerging relationship between planets from one whose exact phase has already passed. This adds timing, direction, and context to aspect interpretation. It also prevents aspects from being judged by geometry alone, encouraging attention to actual planetary motion and to traditional conditions such as perfection, prohibition, frustration, and translation of light.
