Serpens (Caput)

Definition

Serpens Caput, meaning “the Serpent’s Head,” is the western portion of the constellation Serpens. The constellation is divided into two visible sections—Caput and Cauda, the tail—with Ophiuchus positioned between them. In astrology, Serpens Caput is approached through its individual fixed stars rather than treated as a zodiac sign, house, planet, or lunar node.

Astrological Meaning

Its imagery combines the serpent’s alertness, secrecy, renewal, instinct, and potentially dangerous power with the guiding influence of Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer. Astrologers may associate prominent stars in this region with perception, specialized knowledge, strategic ability, healing symbolism, or complicated encounters with desire and influence. Interpretations vary by star and tradition. A close conjunction with the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Midheaven, or a planet is generally more significant than the constellation’s broad location alone.

Why It Matters

Serpens Caput helps distinguish constellation symbolism from ordinary zodiac interpretation. Its presence does not create a thirteenth zodiac sign, nor does it carry one fixed meaning for everyone. When relevant through a close fixed-star contact, it can add a focused layer of serpent symbolism to a natal chart, election, or event chart. Orb, planetary condition, house placement, and the chart’s wider context remain essential.
