Abscission
Definition
Abscission is a traditional astrological term for the interruption or cutting off of an expected planetary result. It is most often used when a planet is applying to more than one contact and the first perfected aspect prevents, redirects, or frustrates the influence promised by a later one.
Astrological Meaning
In horary and traditional judgment, timing and sequence matter. A planet may appear ready to complete an aspect, yet another planet can intervene first. The earlier contact changes the situation before the original promise has time to develop. Abscission therefore describes more than difficulty; it describes a competing influence that alters the chain of events.
Why It Matters
The concept reminds astrologers not to interpret a single applying aspect in isolation. The entire pattern of motion must be considered, including which planet moves fastest, which aspect perfects first, and whether retrogradation or prohibition changes the outcome.
