Discover the symbolic meaning behind all 360 degrees of the zodiac.
Every degree of the zodiac carries its own unique symbolic image, known as a Sabian Symbol. Since each of the twelve zodiac signs contains 30 degrees, the complete Sabian system includes 360 symbols—one for every degree of the zodiac.
These symbols add another layer of meaning to an astrology chart. They may provide insight into personality, relationships, career, spiritual growth, life direction, and the deeper purpose connected with a particular planetary position.
What Are the Sabian Symbols?
The Sabian Symbols were developed in 1925 through a collaboration between astrologer Marc Edmund Jones and psychic Elsie Wheeler. Each zodiac degree was associated with a symbolic image, creating a complete collection of 360 individual degree meanings.
Rather than interpreting an entire zodiac sign as one continuous influence, the Sabian Symbols examine the specific degree occupied by a planet or chart point. Each degree has its own image, message, and symbolic interpretation.
How Sabian Symbols Work in an Astrology Chart
Every planet, angle, asteroid, or mathematical point in a horoscope occupies a specific sign and degree. The Sabian Symbol for that degree can be combined with the traditional meaning of the planet or chart point to create a more detailed interpretation.
For example, the Sun represents identity, vitality, purpose, and personal direction. The Sabian Symbol connected with the Sun’s degree may describe an additional image or life theme through which that solar energy is expressed.
The positions most commonly explored through Sabian Symbols are the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Rising Sign, and Midheaven or MC. However, Sabian Symbols may be applied to every planet in the chart, including Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
The meaning of the planet is layered with the meaning of the Sabian Symbol for its particular degree and zodiac sign. This does not replace the traditional planetary interpretation. Instead, it adds another symbolic dimension to it.
How to Find the Correct Sabian Symbol
Sabian Symbols are numbered from 1 through 30 within each zodiac sign. Astrological degree positions are therefore converted to the corresponding Sabian Symbol number.
Use the next numbered degree whenever the position contains minutes or seconds. In simple terms, round the zodiac degree up to find the Sabian Symbol number.
- 0°01′ Aries corresponds with Aries Sabian Symbol 1.
- 12°18′ Libra corresponds with Libra Sabian Symbol 13.
- 27°52′ Capricorn corresponds with Capricorn Sabian Symbol 28.
- 29°01′ Aries corresponds with Aries Sabian Symbol 30.
A position between 0°00′ and 0°59′ is associated with Symbol 1. A position between 29°00′ and 29°59′ is associated with Symbol 30.
