Campanus Houses

Definition

Campanus Houses are an unequal house system used to divide an astrological chart into twelve sectors. The method divides the prime vertical—the great circle running through the east point, zenith, west point, and nadir—into equal arcs. These divisions are projected onto the ecliptic to determine the intermediate house cusps, while the Ascendant and Midheaven anchor the angular framework.

Astrological Meaning

In interpretation, Campanus uses the familiar meanings of the twelve houses but calculates their boundaries differently from systems such as Placidus, Equal House, or Whole Sign. As a result, a planet may occupy a different house when the same birth data is recalculated. Campanus is often valued for its spatial emphasis, with some astrologers finding it useful when examining how planetary themes are oriented toward personal experience, environment, and visible areas of life.

Why It Matters

The chosen house system can change which life area receives a planet’s symbolism, especially when that planet lies near a cusp. Comparing Campanus with another system may clarify which interpretation best fits the chart, but it should not be treated as a way to force a preferred result. Accurate birth time and location remain important, and charts at extreme latitudes may produce highly uneven houses or technical difficulties.
