Koch Houses

Definition

Koch Houses are a time-based quadrant house system used to divide a natal chart into twelve houses. Developed by German astrologer Walter Koch, the method fixes the Ascendant as the First House cusp and the Midheaven as the Tenth House cusp, then calculates the intermediate cusps through formulas based on diurnal motion, birth time, and geographic latitude.

Astrological Meaning

Using Koch Houses does not change the zodiac signs or planetary positions in a chart. It may, however, place planets in different houses than systems such as Placidus, Equal House, or Whole Sign Houses. Because houses describe areas of life, these shifts can alter interpretive emphasis. For example, a planet near a cusp might move from the Second House of resources into the Third House of communication. The planet’s sign and aspects remain the same, while its likely field of expression changes.

Why It Matters

The Koch system matters because house-system choice can shape how an astrologer organizes a chart’s themes. Some practitioners find Koch cusps especially useful in natal interpretation or predictive work, but no house system is universally accepted as the single correct method. Koch calculations may also become impractical at extreme latitudes. Comparing Koch with another system can reveal which interpretations remain consistent and which depend on cusp placement, encouraging a more careful reading rather than a fixed conclusion.
