Sect

Definition

Sect is a traditional astrology doctrine that divides charts and planets into diurnal and nocturnal groups. A birth with the Sun above the horizon is a day chart; one with the Sun below the horizon is a night chart. The Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn belong to the day sect, while the Moon, Venus, and Mars belong to the night sect. Mercury’s sect varies according to its solar phase.

Astrological Meaning

Sect helps describe how comfortably a planet may express its nature within a natal chart. In a day chart, Jupiter generally acts as the more supportive benefic, while Saturn may be easier to manage than Mars. In a night chart, Venus tends to be the more supportive benefic, and Mars may function more constructively than Saturn. A planet belonging to the chart’s sect is called in sect; one belonging to the opposite sect is contrary to sect. This distinction modifies interpretation rather than labeling a planet entirely favorable or unfavorable. Sign placement, house, aspects, rulership, and other conditions remain important.

Why It Matters

Using sect adds precision to natal and predictive astrology by showing why the same planetary placement can operate differently from one chart to another. It is especially valuable when assessing benefics, malefics, planetary periods, and transits. Sect offers a useful layer of context, but it works best as part of a complete chart analysis rather than as a stand-alone judgment.
