Definition

Slow of Course is a traditional astrological condition in which a planet is moving more slowly than its customary or average daily speed. It is determined from the planet’s actual motion at the chart’s date and time. A slow planet is not necessarily stationary or retrograde: it may still be moving forward through the zodiac, only at a reduced pace.

Astrological Meaning

Classical astrologers generally treated slowness as an accidental debility, suggesting that the planet may have less momentum or may take longer to express its significations. In a natal chart, this can describe a planetary function that develops deliberately, works inwardly, or requires patience before becoming readily available. In horary or electional astrology, a slow significator may indicate delay, hesitation, limited progress, or circumstances unfolding at a measured rate. The planet’s sign, house, aspects, dignity, and relationship to the matter being judged remain essential; slowness alone does not determine the outcome.

Why It Matters

Recognizing Slow of Course adds information about tempo and capacity that sign and house placement cannot provide by themselves. It helps distinguish a planet that is symbolically well placed from one that may still operate with reduced speed.
