Definition
A planet’s rising time is the approximate local time when it crosses the eastern horizon. It depends on the observer’s latitude, the date, and the planet’s celestial position. This is different from a zodiac sign’s rising time, which describes how long a sign or group of degrees takes to ascend.
Astrological Meaning
A practical approximation begins with the planet’s right ascension and declination for the chosen date, together with the location’s geographic latitude. Its rising hour angle can be estimated from the relation cos H = −tan latitude × tan declination. Converting that angular interval into sidereal hours and comparing it with local sidereal time gives an approximate clock time. Astrologers may instead use an ephemeris, house tables, or chart software. A rougher traditional method compares the planet’s longitude with tabulated ascensional times for the zodiac, although planetary latitude and local horizon conditions can reduce accuracy.
Why It Matters
Rising time helps determine whether a planet is near the Ascendant, below the horizon, or entering the visible sky. In traditional astrology, these distinctions may affect angularity, visibility, and judgments about a planet’s prominence. Because refraction, elevation, planetary latitude, and time-zone conversion can shift the result, approximation is usually sufficient for general interpretation, while precise work calls for astronomical calculation.
