Night Houses are the nocturnal domiciles assigned to the traditional planets. In this usage, “house” means a zodiac sign ruled by a planet, not one of the twelve chart houses. The principal night domiciles are Taurus for Venus, Virgo for Mercury, Scorpio for Mars, Capricorn for Saturn, and Pisces for Jupiter. Cancer, ruled by the Moon, completes the nocturnal side of the traditional domicile scheme.
A planet placed in its night house is in domicile and can generally express its nature with familiarity and authority. The nocturnal designation adds context rather than a separate dignity score: it links the sign to the cooler, more receptive, inward, or consolidating side of its ruler. For example, Mars in Scorpio may operate strategically and privately, while Venus in Taurus may emphasize stability, embodiment, and preservation. Interpretation still depends on sect, house placement, aspects, motion, and other conditions.
Night Houses reveal the symmetry behind traditional planetary rulerships and help explain why one planet can govern two signs in different ways. They are especially useful when comparing a planet’s daytime and nighttime domiciles or assessing how comfortably it functions in a natal chart. They should not be confused with houses below the horizon, sometimes informally associated with nighttime or private experience.
