In astrology, the native is the person whose birth chart is being examined. The term appears frequently in traditional and classical texts as a concise alternative to “chart holder” or “individual.” It refers specifically to the subject of a natal chart, not to the astrologer interpreting it or to people native to a particular place.
Astrological Meaning
When an astrologer describes what a planet, house, aspect, or dignity may signify “for the native,” the statement concerns how that chart factor could operate in the person’s character, circumstances, or life experience. The native is not itself a planet, point, or interpretive technique. It is a reference term that keeps the subject of the reading distinct from other people represented in the chart, such as partners, parents, friends, or rivals.
Why It Matters
Understanding this term makes older astrological writing easier to follow and helps prevent confusion about who is being discussed. It also highlights an important interpretive principle: every natal indication belongs within the context of the whole chart and the native’s actual life. A placement may suggest tendencies or themes, but it does not define the person completely or guarantee a particular event. Modern astrologers may prefer “chart holder,” “client,” or the person’s name, while “native” remains common in traditional astrology.
