Nadir

Definition

The Nadir is the lowest point of the local meridian in an astrological chart, directly opposite the Midheaven. It is commonly identified with the Imum Coeli, or IC, meaning “bottom of the sky.” In many house systems, the IC also forms the cusp of the fourth house, although the astronomical point and house cusp should not always be treated as interchangeable.

Astrological Meaning

Astrologically, the Nadir represents foundations, private life, ancestry, home, family patterns, and the inward sense of belonging. Planets close to this angle may take on a deeply personal or rooted expression, often operating away from public view. The sign on the IC can describe qualities associated with emotional security and one’s preferred domestic atmosphere. Interpretation should include the IC’s ruling planet, nearby aspects, house system, and the opposing Midheaven, which relates more closely to public direction and visibility.

Why It Matters

The Nadir helps balance outer ambition with inner stability. It can show what a person returns to for grounding and how early surroundings may continue to shape private responses. During transits or progressions involving the IC, themes concerning home, family, roots, or personal foundations may become more noticeable, but outcomes depend on the complete chart and current circumstances.
