Minute

Definition

In astrology, a minute usually means a minute of arc, written 1′. It is a unit of angular measurement equal to one-sixtieth of a degree. Each zodiac sign contains 30 degrees, and every degree contains 60 minutes. A minute of time is different: it helps record an exact birth time, which is then converted into chart positions.

Astrological Meaning

Minutes make planetary, angle, cusp, and aspect positions more precise. For example, a planet at 12°35′ Taurus has traveled 12 degrees and 35 minutes through that sign. Astrologers use these finer measurements when calculating aspect orbs, house cusps, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, and timing techniques. Minutes do not carry an independent symbolic meaning; their interpretive value comes from showing exactly where a chart factor is located. Traditional texts may also use minutes when discussing essential dignities, bounds, decans, and sensitive degrees.

Why It Matters

Accurate minutes can help distinguish a close aspect from a wider one and may be especially important for fast-moving angles or time-sensitive forecasting methods. Even so, greater numerical precision does not automatically make an interpretation more certain. If the recorded birth time is approximate, exact minute positions for the Ascendant and houses should be treated cautiously. Minutes are best understood as measurement tools that support, rather than replace, sound chart interpretation.
