Definition

Latitude is an angular measurement north or south of a reference plane. Geographic latitude measures a location’s distance from Earth’s equator and is recorded as part of birth data. Celestial latitude measures how far a planet or other body lies north or south of the ecliptic. It differs from declination, which is measured from the celestial equator.

Astrological Meaning

In chart calculation, geographic latitude helps determine the local horizon, Midheaven, Ascendant, and house cusps for a specific place. Celestial latitude adds a spatial dimension to planetary positions: two bodies may share nearly the same zodiacal longitude while being separated north or south of the ecliptic. Traditional techniques may consider this separation when assessing conjunctions, occultations, eclipses, or a planet’s relationship to the lunar nodes.

Why It Matters

Accurate latitude supports precise chart angles and houses, especially when comparing charts cast for different locations. Understanding celestial latitude also prevents zodiacal position from being mistaken for exact physical alignment. Although many common interpretations rely mainly on longitude, latitude can refine technical work and clarify why some apparent conjunctions are closer in the zodiac than they are in the sky.
