Definition

Lagna is the Sanskrit term commonly used in Jyotish, or Vedic astrology, for the ascendant: the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the time and place of birth. It also identifies the first house and serves as the starting point for arranging the remaining houses in a natal chart. Accurate birth time and location are therefore important when calculating it.

Astrological Meaning

The Lagna describes a person’s outward orientation, approach to life, temperament, and way of meeting new circumstances. Its ruling planet, known as the Lagna lord, adds information through its sign, house, dignity, aspects, and conjunctions. Planets placed in the first house may further shape self-expression and personal priorities. Interpretation also considers influences on the ascendant degree and the condition of the whole chart.
