Definition

Geniture is a traditional astrological term for a person’s nativity or birth chart. Derived from a Latin word associated with birth or generation, it may refer either to the horoscope calculated for the moment and place of birth or, in older texts, to the circumstances of birth examined through that chart. The term appears most often in classical, medieval, and Renaissance astrology.

Astrological Meaning

Interpreting a geniture involves assessing the planetary positions, houses, aspects, and other conditions present at birth. Traditional astrologers may give particular attention to the Ascendant, its ruling planet, the Sun, the Moon, sect, essential dignity, and house rulership. These factors are considered together rather than treated as isolated indicators. Unlike a horary chart, which addresses a specific question, or an electional chart, which selects a suitable time, a geniture centers on the native’s life, character, circumstances, and developing potentials.

Why It Matters

Understanding this term makes older astrological writings easier to follow because many authors use “geniture” where modern astrologers would say “natal chart.” It also highlights the structured approach of traditional natal astrology, in which chart factors are weighed according to condition, relevance, and context. A geniture is not necessarily viewed as a fixed script; its symbols can describe tendencies, resources, tensions, and recurring themes whose expression may vary with choices and circumstances.
