Doryphory

Definition

Doryphory, also called spear-bearing, is a condition in Hellenistic and later traditional astrology in which one or more planets serve as attendants or bodyguards to the Sun, Moon, or another important planet. The term comes from the image of guards carrying spears beside a ruler. Exact qualifications differ among classical authors and may involve planetary position, phase, visibility, sect, and dignity.

Astrological Meaning

A planet acting as a spear-bearer is interpreted as supporting the prominence, authority, resources, or effectiveness of the luminary or principal planet it attends. Some methods emphasize planets rising before the Sun or setting after the Moon, while others apply more detailed conditions. Benefic or well-dignified attendants may indicate constructive support; challenged planets can suggest that recognition or influence comes with complications. Doryphory should therefore be judged according to the specific traditional technique being used.
